Students walking through the Hilliard Plaza were dazzled by lights dancing upon the ground near the Ansari Business Building. Dozens of mirrors were suspended in a tree, spinning slowly in the breeze. Students walking to class took the time to stop and stare at what was called “The Selfie Tree.” Dazzled and a bit confused they whipped out their phones for a quick picture to share on Facebook or Instagram. Many students at first did not understand that this was an art piece. “Mirrors,” is what a passing student initially thought when he first noticed the tree. However, when he looked more closely he said, “It’s some kind of awareness for beauty and self-confidence.” “It looked interesting, it caught my attention. I wasn’t sure what is was, but it seems cool,” said another passing student. When told that the tree was a piece of art she said, “It’s creative, it’s definitely a creative way to get your point across.” The Selfie Tree is part of a four-week series.
It was meant to be a pleasant and very public surprise that brought art into the everyday lives of students. The Selfie Tree was meant to draw people in and encourage self-reflection. It is safe to say that the tree fulfilled its purpose. There was not a student or faculty member that walked by the tree that did not take even the smallest moment to reflect on themselves and their lives. The project was intended to be fun and thought-provoking, not serious.
